MEET JUDITH FLETCHER
Hello, I’m Judith Fletcher — the woman behind Judith’s Merivale.
My story with clothing began long before I ever imagined owning a boutique. It began when I was a young girl, sitting beside my mother while she worked at her sewing machine.
I can still remember watching her guide the fabric beneath the needle, completely calm and focused. She taught me how to sew on a button, repair a torn seam and carefully mend something that might otherwise have been thrown away.
But the most important thing she taught me wasn’t simply how to sew.
She taught me that something worn or damaged could become special again when it was treated with patience and care.
That lesson stayed with me throughout my life.
A Small Beginning Around My Dining Table
Many years later, I learnt about children entering foster care with very few belongings of their own. Some arrived with little more than the clothes they were wearing.
I couldn’t stop thinking about them.
So I began collecting good children’s clothing wherever I could find it. Friends and people in the community started putting pieces aside for me, and before long, my dining room was filled with small piles of shirts, jumpers, trousers and dresses.
I washed every piece, checked it carefully and folded it neatly.
If something had a missing button, a loose hem or a torn sleeve, I brought out my old sewing machine and repaired it. It was the same machine that reminded me of everything my mother had taught me.
In the evenings, I sat around my dining table putting together small clothing packs. I tried to make each one feel thoughtful and personal, because I wanted the child receiving it to know that someone had taken time and care over what belonged to them.
It may have seemed like a small gesture, but to me, it never felt small.
Those evenings became some of the most meaningful moments of my life.
The Dream I Kept Quiet
While I was repairing and organising those clothes, another dream slowly began to grow.
I had always loved the way clothing could change how someone felt. Not because it could turn them into a different person, but because the right piece could help them recognise themselves again.
I began dreaming of opening a little boutique of my own.
I imagined a warm and welcoming place where women could take their time. Somewhere they could browse without pressure, share a story, ask for an honest opinion and find something that made them feel comfortable and beautiful.
For a long time, I kept that dream to myself.
Opening a boutique felt like the sort of thing other people did. I wondered whether I had waited too long or whether I was being unrealistic.
But the lesson my mother had given me kept returning: something meaningful deserves patience, time and care.
Eventually, I decided it was time to stop quietly imagining that life and begin creating it.
Becoming Judith’s Merivale
That decision became Judith’s Merivale here in Christchurch.
When I first opened the doors, I thought I was creating a clothing boutique. Over time, I realised it had become something much more personal.
Women came in with their sisters, daughters and closest friends. They told me about celebrations, holidays, difficult years and new beginnings. Some were rediscovering their style after spending decades caring for everyone around them.
I saw women try on something unexpected, look into the mirror and smile in a way that told me they felt like themselves again.
Those moments reminded me why I had opened the boutique.
I have never believed that style has an age limit. Growing older should never mean becoming invisible or losing the freedom to wear something colourful, expressive or joyful.
Every woman deserves to feel comfortable in her clothing — but she also deserves to feel noticed, confident and completely herself.
The Heart Behind the Boutique
I am still the same woman who notices a loose button, an uneven hem or a detail that needs a little extra care.
My old sewing machine remains an important part of my life and a reminder of where everything began: beside my mother, and later around my dining table preparing clothing packs for children in foster care.
Judith’s Merivale grew from those same values.
Care. Patience. Kindness. And the belief that clothing can carry far more meaning than we sometimes realise.
This boutique is not simply about filling a wardrobe. It is about finding pieces that can move through real life with you — to lunch with family, coffee with friends, celebrations, holidays and the peaceful moments that belong only to you.
When you support Judith’s Merivale, you are supporting the dream I carried quietly for many years.
You are helping me preserve something that began with my mother’s hands, continued through those children’s clothing packs and eventually became this little boutique in Christchurch.
Thank you for taking the time to learn a little more about me.
And wherever you may be in New Zealand, I hope something from Judith’s Merivale brings you comfort, confidence and a little extra joy.
With love,
Judith Fletcher
